Mary Quite Contrary, made by Judd Foundry, early 19th C., 2 piece cast iron with faint seem. Nice scale on this piece and heavy, weighing in at 12 lbs. Marked #1292 on back. The name and image of this piece come from the English nursery rhyme of the same name. Many theories abound about the song but my favorite is that it refers to Mary I or Bloody Mary, and the line "how does your garden grow?" refers to her inability to produce an heir or the fact that she killed so many Protestants that the graveyard was overflowing. Nursery rhymes are wild and real dark. Size: 14.5"T x 8"L x 4.5"D
